'Maid Julie'

  • MuCCC 142 Atlantic Ave Rochester, NY 14607 (map)

It is the year of our Lord 1296 in British-occupied Scotland, and it is the feast of Midsummer's Eve. Lady Julie, the beautiful and wild young daughter of the lord of the manor has caused quite a stir at the raucous celebrations by cavorting with the common servants all night long. Most notable is her interest in Ian, a lowly manservant betrothed to the cook, Cairistíona. Ian's rebellious spirit is well-matched to Lady Julie's, and their flirtations turn into a battle of wills as Cairistíona dozes. Who will come out on top as these titans from two vastly disparate social classes wrestle figuratively...and perhaps literally? More importantly, what will happen if Lady Julie is no longer a maid come morning?

Adapted from August Strindberg's well-beloved relationship drama, 'Maid Julie' is a romanticized take on the chilling and electric favorite of centuries' worth of audiences. It promises to both delight and disturb.
